The Day After the Day After Tomorrow, for children 6+, offers a positive vision of the future and questions our concept of time. Choreographers Cécile Bally and Cathy Walsh, together with drummer Steve Heather, time travel in a world inspired by Solarpunk science-fiction.

<img width="1800" height="1200" width_o="1800" height_o="1200" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9271312cbb145cd55011a0e84fcb74468b12d17a53528534740b4df96a8c73ae/D5b00236.jpg" data-mid="155060415" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9271312cbb145cd55011a0e84fcb74468b12d17a53528534740b4df96a8c73ae/D5b00236.jpg" />&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

_ Prof. Maren Witte

"With their artistic-scientific research, the choreographers Cécile Bally and Cathy Walsh undertake a project&nbsp;with great socio-political potential: they work with children on their understanding of time and on their ideas&nbsp;of what the future holds. This is, I would argue, as much of a challenge for adults as it is for children, especially since we adults - in the so-called Western world, have learned to conceptualize Time and Society exclusively within the capitalist understanding of the world. So it is much harder for us (according to the philosophers T.J. Demos and Marc Fisher) to imagine a future AFTER capitalism than one that further considers&nbsp;the capitalist principle. Artists like Cécile Bally and Cathy Walsh, in initiating such a critical-choreographic project, are therefore to be understood as pioneers and creative resistance fighters".

_ Prof. Maren Witten &nbsp;

_ Maria Ladopoulos in Tanzschreiber

“With a great deal of wit, magic, and bright colours, “Über Überüberübermorgen” embarks on a journey of discovery into the future that visibly captivates and amuses the children in the audience.”

_ Maria Ladopoulos in Tanzschreiber

German Premiere : December 2021 - Ballhaus Ost, Berlin

French Premiere : November 2022 - Festival BORN TO BE ALIVE - Manège, Scène Nationale - Reims

ENMisty summer
morning, Glitch and Copper Key are walking towards Digital Park. They
are friends. It’s 2101. The world has been flooded, and yes, that
has challenged the urban architecture, As they pass the door of the
social wellness facility, the »Safety, Sanity, and Security« sign
flashes, and a vague memory pops up : they remember that they
don’t remember. Caught in an autocratic virtual world that feeds
them with synthetic fries, they wonder how long they can continue to
adapt. Will they succeed to hack the future?
Choregrapher Cécile Bally and Emma Tricard create with the foley artist Niels Bovri a
performance based on a
science-fiction novella that was written collectively with various
groups in Kortrijk, Aix-en-Provence, Santiago de Chile, Reims, and
Berlin. Drawing from issues affecting each of these local
communities, the piece became a political thriller, delving into
questions of survival in autocratic (AI driven) worlds.

FR

A
group of teenage girls meet. Sitting on a bench, they share memories
and songs, discuss their personal and collective troubles, and dream
of what they could become, oscillating between boredom and panic in
the highly-planned architecture of their environment. Trapped amongst
the remains of an urban nightmare built on earnest but misguided
community housing projects, they wonder: Are there still
possibilities waiting at The
End of the Road?

In
this work, Cécile Bally uses Sitcom-strategies to examine “Teenage
Angst” and visions of radical change at the peripheries of urban
life. A maximalist scenography made of moving backdrops and an
orginal soundtrack by the rapper Haszcara transport the audience into
an imaginary space at the borders of the city. The
End of the Road&nbsp;is a celebration of «zoner», a french verb describing the action of
«hanging out outside while doing nothing» : a verb used to
criticize a lifestyle associated with young people living in the
French suburbs, «zoner» is here presented as a space of
potentiality outside of consumerism, based on friendship and use of
public space.

DE

Different buildings from different peripheries perform as the background for this piece:

LES ÉSPACES D’ABRAXAS (1982), built by Spanish architecht Ricardo Bofill, is the kind of post-modern utopian housing project erected to solve a
housing crisis in the east of Paris. It hosts 600 living units, spread
out over three buildings. Inspired by the Greek Odeon and the Roman
Amphitheater, this place was designed to be centered around itself in an
attempt to decentralize the Parisian metropolis. Its purpose failed.
Due to its futuristic atmosphere the building has been the scene for
dystopian science ction lms, such as Brazil (1984) and The Hunger Games:
Mockingjay (2015).

WBS 70 OR WOHNUNGSBAUSERIE 70, is a specic type of Plattenbau, a
construction method that makes use of large prefabricated concrete
slabs. The technique enabled the German Democaric Republic (GDR) to
develop whole new areas very fast. Throughout the 1970s, WBS 70
buildings rose up all over Berlin. One of the prime examples – ‘die
Platte aller Platten’ – can be found on Roederplatz. In the same place,
there is a series of another type of Plattenbau (WBS/QP 71-R) adorned by
big rainbows.

LES DAMIERS (1976), built by Jacques Binoux and Michel Folliasson in
Courbevoie, a suburb of Paris that became a major business district over
the last years. It comprises 640 apartments divided in four buildings.
Twelve years ago, the inhabitants of Les Damiers learned that the
buildings would be demolished and replaced by two gigantic towers, the
Hermitage Plaza, which should host of ces, high end appartments and a
Hotel. The habitants of Les Damiers have been evicted but due to a lack
of funding, the construction of the towers hasn’t started yet.

LES ARCADES DU LAC (1981), built by Ricardo Bofill, is an ensemble of
appartement buildings located 25km west of Paris. Due to its close
proximity to Versailles, but also due to the immensity of the building,
the Arcades are also known as the “Versailles of the people”. Constructed
as a pedestrian area, the site is suprisingly empty as all blocks are
connected through an underground parking system which makes it uncessary
to pass through the outside to go home.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT

The Price Is Right is a choreographic nightmare, a study of the supermarket – what is sold and what is done in this space? How do we meet each other and what would we dream to encounter there? The work is a critical tribute to a place where we all go, a modern place of gathering and harvesting.

The supermarket is a daily symbol of the consumer society – a visual materialization of the concept of accumulation. It is a place for all and yet a place that segregates, as there are different supermarkets and products for every social class and every lifestyle. The basic principle of the supermarket, self-service, has created a place where people seek contact with objects instead of humans. Digging further in her desire to create performances as dreams, Cécile Bally is researching this hyper-normed space that paradoxically stimulates our impulsive desires. The Price Is Right depicts the supermarket as an ideal survival zone, a last resort where one has to deal with prices, promotional jingles, stealing, absurdity and apocalypse.

“ The big supermarket down the road is always open: all day its electric doors slide stolidly back and forth, admitting and discharging streams of people. Its neon lit space is so impersonal and so eternal that it emanates both comfort and alienation. Inside you can forget that you're not alone, or that you are." Rachel Cusk, Aftermath

AKTION is a lecture-performance about supermarket. The
supermarket is a place where we all go, a modern place of gathering and
harvesting; a hyper
normed space that paradoxically stimulates our impulsive
desires. Commodities are at the centre of
this space, which standardizes our way of living and creates communal
references while emphasizing economic disparities. Our research takes
place mainly inside supermarket where we are collecting movements,
images, micro-stories and sounds in order to create a sort of collective
autobiography of this place. We are starting the reflexion as close as
possible to the context of the observation before to allow a wild
fictional interpretation of facts. This lecture performance is
reflecting on how categories and schema can inspire performative states.

AN ORGANIZATIONAL STUDY, THAT’S MY WORK

If you understand what I say you will realize that I am not saying so much, if you don’t, you might guess that I try to say a lot. From the inside, I just try to follow an idea until the end and it is already a good challenge considering that I am looking at the stage from above in order to be sure to end at the front right corner.
A solo by Cécile BallyOutside eye Angela Schubot, Asaf Aharonson, Alexandre Viard
With the friendly support of HZT Berlin and Goethe Institut Nachwuchsförderung

In 2013, I wrote a master’s thesis in decision theory on how ideas, in a creative process in contemporary dance, emerge, develop and blend into a piece. What is negotiated and who is deciding? I was looking at dance through ethnographic glasses in order to better understand its organization und created a model conceptualizing my observations.
In this solo, I try to understand, with a dose of absurdity, what it means to react physically to academic methodologies. How can a dramaturgy embody the conventional shapes of academic writing but not the meaning of its content?
Nudity as a costume and two simple props are chosen for their ability to take on different meanings and be the support of a rapid transformation of ideas.

In Francisco de Goya’s famous print “The sleep of reason produces monsters” (1797) we see Goya asleep on his desk surrounded by creatures of the night: owls, cats, and bats. The backside of the engraving reads “Fantasy abandoned by reason produces impossible monsters: united with reason, fantasy is the mother of the arts and the origin of their marvels.” A century later, in 1897, Bram Stoker’s Dracula is published, and it took precisely one hundred more years for the human world to broadcast Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in 1997, on TV.
In THE SLEEP OF REASON, vampires speak for themselves and look at our world from their perspective, playing with the superstitions and clichés surrounding them. This work proposes an appropriation of reason by the world of the undead. If humans have stopped believing in vampires, do they still believe in the magic of theater? Can the stage maintain its magical potential when all the tricks are on display?

REVIEW
Vampirin neben Nicht-Vampirin, neben Baby-Vampirin, neben Dinosaurier-Vampir, neben Knoblauchgirlanden. Sound im bunten Dunkelreich liefert Katy Perry: We can dance, until we die, you and I will be young forever.

ON TRANSITIVITY AND SUCCESS: A SHOE

Knowledge traditionally refers to the world of science and rationality. Now let’s change the frame: If artists were the ones in charge of the creation of knowledge, what would our knowledge look like? How would we apprehend the objects and entities surrounding us?
ON TRANSITIVITY AND SUCCESS: A SHOE is confronting 5 performers and 40 objects with scientific methods used to create knowledge. What is the relation between refutation and failure? Demonstration and success? What is the place of emotions in the logic of scientific discovery? The experimentation is happening on stage, a space where magic can happen rationality can be shaken up and the audience is willing to believe, for a while, in it.
ON TRANSITIVITY AND SUCCESS: A SHOE is therefore dealing with a paradox. The performer are constantly creating new truth and knowledge through common methods allowing a shared knowledge to appear. Nevertheless, magic and irrationality are here at the centre of knowledge creation.
